The director of a Waterloo homeless shelter has been given probation for stealing money from the nonprofit organization.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that 60-year-old Joni Kay Hansen on Monday was given a deferred judgment, two to five years of probation and ordered to pay restitution.

She'd entered Alford pleas to theft charges. In an Alford plea, a person doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges there is enough evidence for a likely conviction.

Authorities say Hansen used the organization's ATM card to withdraw nearly $43,000 at the Isle Casino Hotel between 2010 and 2012 and used the money for gambling.

The newspaper says Hansen has remained director of Cedar Valley Hospitality House throughout the case.
