Cold weather drives greenhouse business

Posted: Updated:

Tuesday was cold, and it had a lot of people asking, why so soon? But at Petersen and Tietz Florists and Greenhouses, they're not too upset.

"Yeah it's absolutely amazing," said Heidi Tietz De Silva, looking out over her expanse of poinsettias.

Tietz De Silva said an early cold snap drives business, and brings people in looking for holiday decorations.

"It's kind of a good thing," she said. "It gets everyone in the spirit of what we're growing next."

She said business is usually best for Mother's Day, in May, but a November rush on poinsettias isn't bad.

And yes, hearing the boiler kick on hurts her wallet, but not as much as you might think.

"It's actually just during the night that we're looking at that boiler really pumping out," she said.

During the day, the sun heats the greenhouse to a balmy 65 degrees.

"I just need some sunshine, yeah," Tietz De Silva said.
