World's largest cyclo-cross event hosted in Iowa City

Posted: Updated:

The world's largest cyclo-cross event is expected to surpass all records for participation this year.

Organizers of the 2014 UCI Carousel Volkswagen Jingle Cross Rock cyclo-cross race expects a huge turnout as the event continues to grow year after year.

On Friday, November 14 through Sunday, November 16 racers will ride around a closed two-mile loop course on the Johnson County Fairgrounds. Riders dismount their bicycles at specific points and carry their bikes over short barriers before remounting their bikes to continue around the course.

All proceeds from the event will support University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Cyclo-cross combines elements of mountain biking and road racing with cross-country running.

Music, food and drinks will be provided to contribute to the fun atmosphere all weekend long.

The daily events start with short 30-minute races for beginners and juniors on less-challenging courses.

Parking for the event is free.
