Iowa City murder suspect dies before his day in court

Posted: Updated:

A man accused of killing his wife in 1997 has died before his day in court.

Former University of Iowa researcher John Bloomfield faced charges for first-degree murder in the death of Frances Bloomfield. John Bloomfield was linked to the murder in 2013 after DNA evidence linked him to crime. Back in 1997, Frances Bloomfield was strangled in Iowa City, and her body was dumped in Rockford, Illinois. Her husband denied any wrongdoing.

Earlier this year, a judge gave John Bloomfield permission to live under strict monitoring at his Minnesota home because he was struggling with cancer. His attorney says he had filed a motion to dismiss last Monday. He says Bloomfield's due process rights were jeopardized due to the delay between the investigation and actual charges being filed. Spies felt his client was less capable of defending himself due to the amount of time in between and Bloomfield's advanced age and declining health.

The trial was scheduled for next year.
