State volleyball returns to Cedar Rapids: What you need to know

Posted: Updated:
CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - State volleyball is returning to downtown Cedar Rapids.

We're talking dozens of teams, and thousands of fans on the way.

The Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau says the 2013 tournament brought in 28,000 people, and it expects similar numbers this year.

Park Cedar Rapids will have event rates during the tournament: $5 at the two ramps right by the U.S. Cellular Center, $3 at the ramps a few blocks away.

Those rates do not come with in-and-out privileges. You'll pay each time you enter.

Park Cedar Rapids is warning monthly users that there will be increased traffic in and around the ramps this week. They say you should expect some delays and recommend that if you want to avoid some frustration, leave your car parked all day -- if you can.

"I'm not necessarily concerned about parking when we have all of these extra people downtown, but I definitely am concerned about finding something for lunch, so I may take some extra time at home to pack my own lunch and bring it," said Jen Olsen, who works downtown.

She's concerned because restaurants are expecting large crowds -- especially places like Jersey's, which is just a few doors down from the U.S. Cellular Center where the games are being played.

"A lot of 20- and 30-person parties, pretty much constant throughout the whole day," said Tory Thompson, Jersey's manager. "They don't really call for reservations, so we've just got to make sure we're staffed and ready for it."

Thompson says they are.

As for the rest of us -- ready or not -- the tournament is about to begin.
