ELGIN (AP) - A Postville man faces charges on suspicion of starting a fire while trying to steal gasoline.

Aaron Kristen Hickman of Postville faces charges of second-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal mischief after deputies say he tried drilling a hole into a vehicle's fuel tank, starting a fire, and then trying to steal fuel in the same way from another vehicle.

The Fayette County Sheriff's Office says Hickman tried drilling a hold into the fuel tank of a van owned by Brian Schroeder. During the drilling, the fuel ignited, causing the van to catch fire next to a building owned by Chapman Electric in Elgin.

The building sustained more than $4,000 in damage.

Authorities say Hickman then left the scene before police or fire arrived and drove to Clermont, where he tried the same process again.

The Elgin Fire Department assisted at the scene.
