A group of elementary students collected thousands of coats for those in need.
Fourth grade students from Longfellow Elementary and other students in the Iowa City school district helped give away more than 3,000 coats, hats and other winter accessories.
Coats for Kindness is a winter gear give away and month-long service project where fourth graders collect winter gear and distributed them to families.
The event gives parents and children in the Iowa City area things to stay warm during the winter months.
"It's really exciting, the whole class worked really hard to get all these," said fourth grader Adrian Bostian. "We boxed all of them, it took a whole month. It was really fun."
Organizers say the give away has been going on for about 4-5 years.
They say students throughout the district helps the event grow every year.
This year, a family donated more than 10-thousand dollars worth of winter gear.
