Worthington Catholic School to close

WORTHINGTON (KWWL) -

The St. Paul's Catholic School Board voted Oct. 30 to shut the school down at the end of this year.

With only 26 student enrolled, school officials said it just wasn't feasible to keep it running.

It's a blow to the community there because the school has been around for approximately 140 years.

While it's sad for many members of the community there, it didn't come as a total shock.

"We weren't surprised," Sue Burger, a former student of the school, said. "With so few students there, it just didn't make sense to keep it open."

Burger serves on the financial board for the school, but her history with the school goes much deeper than that.

"I was the first class of first grade at that school.  We moved there just a couple months into first grade.  That was 1957, I think," she said.  All of her brothers and sisters attended, along with her only daughter.

"We were just talking the other day about all the stuff that happened there," she added.

As for the 26 current students?  There are six Catholic schools within driving distance of the school, the closest being seven miles away.
