What Cheer man sentenced for killing bald eagle

A What Cheer man has been sentenced to prison for killing a bald eagle.

Authorities said Jason Thomas, 36, saw the bird on a boat trip in rural Mahaska County. It happened on March 16, 2011. Thomas chased the eagle down the river, captured it when it landed and then struck the bird, killing it.

This conviction comes after an investigation by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

Thomas will serve 60 days in prison and one year of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay a $2000 fine, and serve 80 hours of community service.

He's also been banned from any form of hunting.
