Former Black Hawk County youth shelter may be sold

Posted: Updated:

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) -- Black Hawk County supervisors have decided to have an appraisal done before the likely sale of the county's former youth shelter building.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reports that the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday voted to hire Valuation Services to appraise the property, which sits just north of Waterloo.

The county closed the 15-bed youth shelter in June 2013, after Quakerdale was awarded the state contract to care for abused, neglected and troubled children needing shelter and assistance. The nonprofit organization opened a shelter at its Waterloo campus in January. Black Hawk County officials say the switch has saved county tax dollars.

But the former county shelter remains empty and is costing the county about $5,000 in annual maintenance and utility expenses.
