VOLLEYBALL: Union makes 5th straight trip to state

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - The Union volleyball team is making its fifth-straight trip to state despite facing huge odds to get there.

When the high school volleyball season began, the Knights only had one player who had a driver's license.

Union's only senior, Maria Wrage, displayed great leadership for a team full of sophomores and freshmen. This young squad grew up in a hurry and will now have a chance to bring back a state title.

"It's absolutely amazing, it's awesome, knowing that we can get there and we can get it done," Wrage said.

"When you have a bunch of sophomores, you never know how they are going to react to pressure situations," Union head coach Brian Jesse said. "But I thought they handled the pressure well. If they made a mistake, they just came back and keep competing.

"Maria has been pretty special for us," Jesse added. "She has been on four state teams. I really wanted to get back for her -- she really deserved it, she's worked so hard."

Union plays Mount Vernon on Tuesday in the first round of the Class 3A State Tournament in Cedar Rapids.
