Pat Murphy was back on his home turf in Dubuque Tuesday, knocking on doors in the final hours of Election Day.

Murphy is the Democratic candidate for Iowa's 1st Congressional District, which covers most of the KWWL viewing area. He's also a long-time State Representative for District 99.

He is trying to overcome a 2-point deficit in a recent Loras College poll, trailing Republican Rod Blum.

He said he was feeling cautiously optimistic, and wants voters to think of him as an advocate for the working class, and someone who would support Medicare and the future of Social Security.

He said the last-minute votes will be critical to his success.

"You know, quite frankly, that's what our country is made on -- the ability to elect our officials that make the decisions," he said. "So we're just making sure we get every person out to vote."

He said he didn't think the race would be this close.

"If you run for public office, there's always the possibility of winning and losing," he said. "You have to take that into account, but I've got 25 great years to serve people in the legislature, and I want to continue that in Congress. I'm going to work into the night, and hopefully we'll be victorious."

Murphy's crew was out knocking on doors until sunset.

His watch party will be at Happy's Place in Dubuque.
