WEST DES MOINES (KWWL) - Iowa's governor is now the longest-serving governor in history. Not Iowa history -- United States history.

The Associated Press has called the race for Iowa governor in Branstad's favor, though full results are not in yet.

Gov. Terry Branstad, the incumbent Republican, won in convincing fashion over his Democratic challenger, State Sen. Jack Hatch. It was a race Branstad was widely expected to win easily.

Branstad celebrated his win with Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds and supporters at the West Des Moines Marriott.

Branstad was elected to an unprecedented sixth term as Iowa's governor, officially making him the longest-serving governor of any state in the United States at any time in the country's history.

Those terms have not run consecutively. Branstad was governor from 1983 until 1999, and again from 2011 to the present. Iowa had Democratic governors Tom Vilsack and Chet Culver in the interim.

Branstad didn't take the polls for granted, however, amassing millions for his campaign and rolling out big-budget statewide ads. Political analysts said Branstad was especially hoping to win counties he hadn't won previously.
