RED OAK (AP) -

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Joni Ernst cast her vote in the southwest Iowa city of Red Oak.

Accompanied by her husband, Gail, Ernst voted early Tuesday at a Red Oak fire station.

Later in the day, she planned to attend a Republican election night party in West Des Moines.

Ernst is competing with Democrat Bruce Braley for a Senate seat that became open after longtime Sen. Tom Harkin opted not to seek re-election.

Braley voted early, and Independent candidate Rick Stewart cast his ballot Tuesday afternoon in Cedar Rapids.

The race is among the closest in the nation and the campaign for the seat will be the most expensive in Iowa history.
