A pair of 4th quarter touchdowns on a kick-off return and an interception turned out to be the difference as 24th ranked UNI dropped #6 Illinois State 42-28.

David Johnson was once again the story of the game for the Panthers. On a day that he passed Corey Lewis as the all-time leading rusher in UNI history, Johnson ran for 129 yards and 2 touchdowns in the win. However, his biggest play came on special teams with the game tied at 21 in the 4th quarter. Johnson received a kick-off at the 2 yard line, shook off a tackle at the 15, and returned it the rest of the way for a 28-21 lead. It was UNI's second special teams touchdown of the game as Charles Brown took back a Redbird punt blocked by Tate Omli.

The Panther defense sealed the game with a pair of interceptions. With a 7 point lead with a minute remaining, Tim Kilfoy intercepted a Tre Robinson pass and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown. Moments later Kilfoy ended the game with his second interception.

The loss was the first for the 6th ranked Redbirds.
