Fish kill reported in Mitchell County

Posted: Updated:

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is investigating a fish kill in the Little Cedar River in Mitchell County.

The DNR says a hose being used to apply manure from a hog confinement broke Friday night at a farm owned by Pronet Farms of Stacyville.

They say it released approximately 5,000 gallons of manure into the Little Cedar River.

They say flow of the manure was slowed by a number of beaver dams and overnight, approximately 100,000 gallons was pumped and land applied to prevent the manure from flowing farther downstream.

Dead fish were found along approximately one-half of a mile of stream.

The DNR says fisheries biologists will be conducting an assessment of the fish kill.
