Wind, cold challenge for students, workers in eastern Iowa

LINN COUNTY (KWWL) - Cold and windy conditions on Halloween have hampered everyone from students to construction workers.

Central City students decided to spend Oct. 31 raking up leaves since they had the day off from school. Wind made the task a lot harder.

"The wind doesn't help any because it just blows the leaves everywhere," said eighth-grader Madison Trietle.

In Cedar Rapids, the lunch hour brought people outside. Some shoved their hands in their pockets to keep warm. Others just bundled up.

For those who spend their whole day working outside, they also pulled out all the layers.

"Stay moving, keep working," said Heath Welsh, who works in construction.

The colder weather also means the construction season is coming to end. Welsh says he and the guys he works with wrap up around Thanksgiving.

"We have a lot of stuff to do but we'll get it done," said Welsh.

While back in Central City, the students fought the weather and got their job done.

"At some points we have to close up the tarp so the leaves don't blow away,"  said Trietle.

Some even said the weather really wasn't such a bad thing because the challenge made the day more fun.
