DUBUQUE (KWWL) -

The mother of a child shot and killed in the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting was in Dubuque Thursday to share her story.

Nicole Hockley's youngest son, Dylan, was shot and killed in Newtown, CT on December 14, 2012. He was six years old.

Now, Hockley works with the Sandy Hook Promise foundation to reduce gun violence. Their mission -- to stop gun violence through mental health support, background checks for gun purchases and community involvement. She said she doesn't want other parents to experience the loss of a child.

"He was an absolutely gorgeous little boy, with a huge smile and a gorgeous laugh," Hockley said. "His death has made significant hole in our family, as you'd expect."

Hockley said her group hasn't had much success in passing legislation to prevent school shootings, so she thinks the best way to keep kids safe is to bring communities together, and work outside the political process.
