Cedar Falls event to encourage more women to run for office

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -

A group pushing an initiative to encourage women in politics will hold a banquet Thursday night.

The fourth-annual Women in Politics Scholarship Banquet is at the Park Place Event Centre in Cedar Falls on Thursday, Oct. 30.

Social time starts at 6 p.m. and dinner begins at 6:30 p.m.

Former Iowa State Representative Dorris Kelley and former Lt. Governor Joy Corning are co-chairing the event.

At the event, Corning will give an update on "50-50 in 2020," a bipartisan initiative to achieve political equity in Iowa.

The featured speaker is Jennifer Lawless, professor of government at American University and the Director of the Women and Political Institute. She will speak on "Why Women Don't Run for Office."
