Prisoner freed in Illinois case that ended death penalty

Posted: Updated:
COOK COUNTY (AP) - A Cook County inmate is free after being part of a high-profile case in the 1980's.

A judge released Alstory Simon, whose confession helped free a death-row inmate in a 1982 double killing.

Simon's confession led to the 1999 release of Anthony Porter, who spent 16 years on death row. His supporters believed he was wrongfully convicted.

This case was a key component in ending the death penalty policy in Illinois.
