Iowa man banned from city council meetings

Posted: Updated:

HAMPTON, Iowa (AP) -- A northern Iowa city council has banned a resident from city buildings after it said he sent a threatening letter to elected officials and employees.

KCCI-TV in Des Moines reports that the letter to the Hampton City Council requested that officials declare Aug. 18 as "Cookie Thornton Day," in memory of a man who killed six people at a 2008 city council meeting in Kirkwood, Missouri.

City officials say 54-year-old Milton Heyde sent the letter in response to a citation for failure to remove trash from his property. In a written response to Heyde, city officials say they viewed the letter as a threat.

Heyde says his letter wasn't intended as a threat.
