Police have a few Halloween safety tips

Posted: Updated:

Wednesday afternoon found Shakila Walker on the hunt for the perfect costumes for her children.

"It's bright, but I don't know if it's going to be bright enough, you know?" she said, picking through costumes at Spirit Halloween in Cedar Falls.

With seven kids, that's a serious undertaking.

"You know, I'm kind of thinking about Thing 1 or Thing 2 ... or Thing 7," she laughed.

To make the cut, she has some criteria.

"Something warm, to keep them warm, and bright colors so they can be seen," she said.

Cedar Falls Police are on board with that. They said to stay safe, it's a good idea to prepare you kids before Halloween night.

"Never enter somebody's home unless you have a parent with them," said Capt. Craig Berte of Cedar Falls Police.

He said working a coat into your children's costumes isn't a bad idea either. He also recommends bring a flashlight, and checking the candy before giving it to your kids.

"You want to look for factory-wrapped, and it's not a choking hazard," he said. "Also, age appropriate for your child."

Berte said it's not a bad idea to check online for sex-offenders in your neighborhood, but it's probably not necessary, since more than 90% of abuse cases are perpetrated by someone close to the child, not a stranger. Either way, a map of offenders is online here.

With that, he said your Halloween without being too scary.
