Posted: Updated:

The Dubuque Community School District is investigating a report of a student bringing a small pocket knife to Prescott Elementary School in Dubuque on Wednesday.

Director of School and Community Relations for the district, Mike Cyze, said a student was in possession of a small pocket knife at school and displayed it in the building.

After the knife was displaced another student immediately reported the presence of the pocket knife to administration and it was promptly taken from the student.

Cyze said the school administrators and resource officers are investigating the incident.

He said the student is no longer in school while the situation is being investigated and appropriate disciplinary action will take place based on the investigations results.

The message that went out to parents is in its entirety below, as sent out in a press release from the district:

Dear Prescott Families,

I am writing to inform you that earlier today, we discovered that a student was in possession of a small pocket knife at school and displayed it in the building. Another student immediately reported the presence of the pocket knife to administrators and it was promptly taken from the student.

As with all situations of this nature, school administrators and school resource officers are investigating the incident to determine the exact happenings. The student involved is no longer in school while the situation is investigated and appropriate disciplinary action, if any, will be taken based on the investigations results.

We wanted you to be aware of what happened and to assure you of our work to address it. As you know, we do not tolerate actions like this in our schools and always strive to provide the safest possible learning environment for our students.

Thank you for your continuous support of Prescott and our students.

Sincerely,

Chris McCarron
