Murphy, Blum stress last-minute campaigning

Posted: Updated:

With just one week remaining before voters head to the polls, it's pretty clear what's at stake.

"The next eight days will probably determine who we send to congress and who we send to the legislature," said Democratic candidate for Iowa 1st District seat Pat Murphy.

That brought Senator Tom Harkin (D-Iowa) to Waterloo to support Murphy, and and House Speaker John Boehner to support Republican candidate Rod Blum.

The race for the 1st District has implications outside Iowa. Not only could a strong voter tonight for Blum or Murphy sway the Senate race, but control of Congress hangs in the balance.

"I think we're up 1.5 points heading into elections day," Blum said. "... We have momentum on our side."

"What [voters] want is they want the economy booming again and that's what we've been about, talked about incessantly for the past two year," Blum said.

"I still feel very good about our race," Murphy said. "We're focusing on absentees. We know we're going to get more people out than in 2010, but we believe we're going to win because we're talking about social security and Medicare.
