Hawks look to fill gaps in line-up

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -  The last few days have been rough on the Hawkeye offense. Running back Leshun Daniels will miss the rest of the regular season after suffering an injury in practice, and freshman receiver Derrick Willies announced he's leaving the program. That news seemed to come out of nowhere.

It kind of came out of thin air last night,” Kirk Ferentz said during his weekly press availability.

I was actually surprised, especially mid-season like this,” said back-up quarterback C.J. Beathard, “I didn't expect that for sure.”

Willies was one of the stars of Iowa's spring game, but once the season came the speedy freshman only had 4 catches and 1 touchdown through 7 games. Despite that limited use, Beathard, one of his closest friends on the team, didn't downplay the loss.

He's a good player. He's the type of guy you like,” said Beathard, “He's huge, he can jump. Yeah, I think it's a big loss."

The Hawkeye defense has a hole to fill as well as Decorah native Josey Jewell will make his first start Saturday versus Northwestern filling in for linebacker Reggie Spearman. Spearman's serving a 2 game suspension for a recent OWI arrest.

Josey's a tough kid,” said senior defensive tackle Carl Davis, “He comes in, does his job to the best of his ability. He's hard, tough, I have a lot of confidence in him.”

Senior linebacker Quinton Alston agreed. “Josey's really aggressive. He doesn't hesitate at all. He's really smart. All these guys on this linebacking corps are smart. We're going to go out there, we're going to trust each other, and we're just going to trust our coaches to put us in the right scheme to go out there and make plays.”
