Fredericksburg woman dies weeks after escaping house fire

A woman has died after she jumped from her bedroom window to escape a fire.

The fire happened earlier this month, but Thursday Sandy Hamann of Fredericksburg died at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City nearly three weeks later.

She suffered burns to nearly 40 percent of her body.

"The fire started in her bedroom. She jumped out of the window to get free and got help from the neighbor here," said Frank Unertl, Hamann's brother.

Unertl says his sister will be dearly missed.

"Through her work plus anybody who needed anything. She was big at picking things up at Goodwill or if she knew anybody needed anything she'd buy them and take them to them. Never ask for anything in return," said Unertl.

Hamann had worked at Pathways Behavioral Services in Chickasaw County for more than 20 years, helping thousands of people along the way. She even got her masters so she could help more people.

"So that she was seeing our mental health clients, seeing our substance abuse clients and whoever came in the door," said Chris Hoffman, executive director of Pathways.

Services for Hamann will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home in Fredericksburg.
