INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) - An eastern Iowa athletic director and head football coach who took his team to a winning season won't coach them in the playoffs.

Independence Community School District Activities Director Brandon Krusey, also the head football coach, had his contract terminated in a closed session of the school board on Oct. 23, Independence superintendent Jean Peterson told KWWL.

Krusey was fired at the same time as director of food service Jessica Weber.

Both contracts were terminated Oct. 23 and effective immediately, according to Peterson, meaning Krusey did not coach Independence's last regular-season football game -- a 28-0 win over Maquoketa.

Peterson did not elaborate on why Krusey and Weber were fired.

"We're working on a transition plan," Peterson said.

She did note that the Independence high school football team's assistant coaches, of which there were several, would be working out a plan for playoffs.

Independence plays at Washington for a first-round Class 3A playoff game Wednesday, Oct. 29.
