Overtime stop pushes North Fayette Valley to district title over New Hampton

WEST UNION (KWWL) -

The outcome was still in doubt right up to the final second. On a 2-point conversion attempt in overtime, New Hampton quarterback Alex Troyna saw his pass attempt fall to the ground, setting off a wild celebration as North Fayette Valley defeated the Chickasaws 25-13 in overtime.

The win gave the Tigerhawks a share of the district title with Dyersville Beckman. They also clinched the district's number one seed due to their head-to-head win over the Blazers.

For a while, it looked like whoever scored first would pick up the win. The Chickasaws and Tigerhawks went scoreless through three quarters on a foggy night in West Union. Finally, NFV senior Josh Mackey finally found the end zone early in the 4th for a 7-0 advantage.

The Tiger Hawks looked to capitalize on their next possession, however quarterback Trevor Hurd would get picked off by Tucker Tenge. Tenge put together a big return to the 18 yard line. A few plays later, Troyna and Tenge hooked up on a 5-yard touchdown strike which eventually led to overtime and a 7-7 tie.

In the extra period, Mackey put the Tigerhawks ahead with a 3 yard touchdown run on third down. Hurd would tack on the 2-point conversion scoring on a quarterback sweep.

New Hampton, however, answered in a pressure situation. Troyna and Tenge connected on the first play of their possession for the touchdown that pulled them within two, but the 2-point conversion would fail giving the Chickasaws a third place finish in the district.

North Fayette Valley will open the playoffs on Wednesday hosting Monticello. New Hampton will go on the road to Monticello.
