Bunger students talk about evacuation after Wednesday fire

EVANSDALE (KWWL) -

School officials took students to Prince of Peace church following the fire at Bunger Middle School.

It took just over an hour to reunite students with their families and send others home on buses.

Parents and students at the scene were relieved everyone was unharmed, but they were pretty shaken up.

"One of my friends came in and said, 'Oh my gosh, this is real!'" Bunger middle school student Sophia Bullerman said. "Everyone was saying they smelled like a rubbery smell, then smoke started coming out of the bathroom, and then we all ran outside and smoke came out of the school."

Students who normally took a bus home from school were able to take a bus home Wednesday. However, students who normally walked home from school needed to be picked up by parents.

Parents said they received multiple alerts of the fire by text message, phone call, and even email. The parents said they dropped everything, and ran to the church to get their children.

"I was shocked," one parent said. "I happened to take work off today -- I was at a doctor's appointment, and I got a text message saying there was a fire at the school," one parent said.

"I was shocked and concerned about my son," said another. "I was at work, so I just jumped up and locked up and left."

School officials said they had to make sure every student not taking the bus was sent back home with a parent or a guardian on their emergency list by identifying parents to make sure the names matched up.
