EVANSDALE (KWWL) - Fire officials don't yet have a cause for a Bunger Middle School fire that started in the girls' restroom on Wednesday morning and led to the evacuation of students and staff for the day.

Fire departments from Waterloo, Evansdale, Gilbertville and Raymond declared the fire out just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, and began cleaning up the scene shortly thereafter.

The fire was contained to a girls' restroom at Bunger. School officials had originally told KWWL the fire began in the boys' bathroom.

KWWL crews on the scene reported seeing smoke coming from the building just after 10 a.m.

Students and staff evacuated safely to Prince of Peace Church nearby, according to Waterloo School District officials.

Students were dismissed on buses beginning at 11 a.m.  The nearby Poyner Elementary School was not impacted by the fire.

"I started praying for whoever it was, and I looked out the window, and I saw that it was across at the school, then I really started praying," said Camilla Voshell-Schuler, a grandparent of one of the students. "And I was so scared, I didn't see the kids, and I had to find out what was going on because I was scared."

The fire damage was confined to the girls' restroom, but smoke damage affected about half of the school.

More than 400 students attend Bunger Middle School.

"You know you always worry about that stuff," said father Jeromy Ramirez. "Every parent worries about that stuff. You get that phone call, you don't really want that phone call to find out something happened to your kid. It's just a natural reaction to want to run to where the danger is to save your child."

Fire officials don't know the cause of the fire yet. The State Fire Marshal's Office was called in to investigate.

A fire also happened in the Bunger girls' bathroom in January 2010.  That fire was found to be arson.
