Threatening Yik Yak messages on UNI campus

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - If you visit Yik Yak's website the slogan reads 'get a live feed of what's going on around you.'

The students I spoke with today said the only thing they see going around is hate.

"Our campus tries to be really inclusive, but seeing all these, it was really threatening," junior Vivian Meade said.

"There was a lot towards blacks, some towards Indians from Eastern India, there's was a lot towards Jews that I saw, some said 'retweet if you miss Hitler.'"

Violent threats posted on Yik Yak are leaving many concerned.

Some students say the racist and violent messages are nothing new.

"I don't think this is a new concept at all. People have always found a venue to spew hate speech against other groups," senior Matthew Stewart said.

But it's the anonymity of the app that students say make things worse.

"Since its anonymous people can just go at it -- they can say whatever they want. And it's sad that it empowers them," Meade said.

The app works as an anonymous message board for students nearby each other to share information.

The app requires GPS services to be on while in use to find users close in proximity.

"The messages can be picked up if the person is in a 1.5 mile radius. That's not far. These are people that we are in class with, that we sit down at lunch with, these are people we see every day and don't know who they are," Stewart said.
