KWWL has learned Waterloo Safety Services Director, Chief Dan Trelka, is one of four finalists for the job of Police Chief in the Denver, Colorado, suburb of Broomfield.

Broomfield's long time Police Chief, Tom Deland, retired in July after 23 years.

Broomfield received 43 applications for its Police Chief opening, and Monday narrowed the list to the final four, including Dan Trelka.

Trelka came to Waterloo as Police Chief in May of 2010.

As part of a city reorganization, Mayor Buck Clark appointed Trelka the city's first-ever Director of Safety Services, overseeing both the Waterloo Police Department and Waterloo Fire & Rescue.

Trelka told KWWL he loves working in Waterloo, but the Broomfield opening presents a great opportunity and would also move him closer to his older children, whom live fairly close to Denver.

Trelka, a former U.S. Marine, came to Waterloo from Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin, where he spent some 18-years, including eight years as Police Chief.

Broomfield is a northern suburb of Denver, with a population of some 55,000.

Trelka and the other three finalists will be interviewed October 29.

The City of Broomfield will hold a public forum October 30, at which time residents will have a chance to meet the four finalists for Broomfield Police Chief.

Broomfield is expected to name its new Police Chief November 17.
