County Attorney: Wife in labor is not an excuse to speed

CALHOUN COUNTY (KWWL) -

A county attorney is ticketing the Iowa father who was speeding to the hospital because his wife was in labor.

Last week, Ben Kohnen was going 86 miles-per-hour on a road where the speed limit was 55. An officer tried to pull Kohnen's speeding SUV over, but his passenger, his pregnant wife, was in labor. Kohnen kept driving, in fear, they wouldn't make it to the hospital.

Eventually, police used stop-sticks to stop the speeding car, and the couple was held at gunpoint until police realized that this was an emergency.

Monday the Calhoun County attorney issued two tickets for Kohnen; one for speeding and a second for a failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.

Kohnen says this could put his commercial driver's license at risk, which he uses for his job
