Marion addresses underage drinking

Posted: Updated:
Citizens in Marion believe there is an issue of underage drinking that needs to be addressed.

The Area Substance Abuse Council will be holding a series of open forums throughout Linn County to combat the problem.

On Oct. 28 at 6pm the council will discuss the impact of the recently passed social host state law, as well as the options local communities have to implement their own related initiatives.

Attendees will be informed of the underage drinking trends in the area, and how to best address these concerns.

This will be followed by a question and answer period, where community input is strongly encouraged.

Social host refers to those codes that seek to hold property owners responsible for knowingly allowing underage drinking on their premises.

Iowa has recently joined other states by passing its own Social Host law, issuing criminal penalties to those that would allow their property to be a venue for underage drinking.

Many believe that such statutes greatly empower local communities by allowing law enforcement the flexibility necessary in order to best do their job.

This forum will be free and open to all. Interested persons are asked to RSVP by contacting Jeffrey Meyers, Prevention Specialist with the Area Substance Abuse Council, at (319) 390-1884 ext. 205 or jmeyers@asac.us
