Hiawatha Fire Department sets fire to home for training

Posted: Updated:

If you drove near the intersection of N. Center Point Road and Boyson Road in Hiawatha over the weekend, you may have noticed a house fire.

You could see flames shooting through windows, but the fire was set for training purposes.

This weekend, the Hiawatha Fire Department has been training six new firefighters to fight real house fire conditions.

Training started with interior fire sets, and ended with a controlled structure fire.

"They wait for the fire to build a little bit, we go in, it's hot a first, you feel the heat even through all this gear, but it's really exciting," said Caleb Fairlie, training to be a firefighter. "They tell us to hit it high, we hit it high, we pencil shot, just little streams."

Instructors say live fire training is invaluable, and many fire departments aren't able to do live fire trainings.

This say the new members experience doing tasks that cannot be simulated by other training methods.

The six new firefighters joined the department in August.
