UPDATE: Apparent suicide in Benton County hazmat case

Posted: Updated:
BENTON COUNTY (KWWL) -

KWWL is learning more about what shut down a highway in Benton County.

Someone called 911 Sunday with concerns about a van at a roadside park north of Vinton off Highway 218.

The sheriff's office says a 46-year-old man from the Waterloo area apparently took his own life.

The sheriff says they believed there may have been hazardous materials inside the van so the Linn County Hazmat Team was called in.

The sheriff says investigators removed some materials from the van and they're now running tests to figure out what those things are.

PREVIOUS STORY:

The Benton County Sheriff's Office said Sunday it's investigating a hazardous materials situation at 55th St. and Highway 218.

A KWWL crew on scene said Benton Co. Sheriff's deputies, Linn Co. Hazardous Materials and the La Porte City Fire Department are all on scene.

A deputy said officers are investigating to see if hazardous chemicals are inside a silver van parked along Highway 218.

Deputies would not confirm what led them to investigate the van.

Traffic is blocked off on Highway 218 from 55th Street to 56th Street.

Stay with KWWL for further updates.
