First congressional district debate preview

WATERLOO (KWWL) - The two candidates looking to represent Iowa's first congressional district will debate live on KWWL. The debate begins on Saturday, October 18 at 7 pm.

The men are well known in Dubuque but will have to prove themselves to voters through the rest of the district -- which covers 20 counties in northeast Iowa.

In earlier interviews, Murphy told KWWL he believes he appeals to the entire district because he's a common man and comes from a union family.

The democrat says if elected, he would be a person to build the middle class and improve the lives of people in Iowa and across the country.

Blum told KWWL he had humble beginnings, and is defined by family and business.

The republican says there's a lot wrong with Washington, but his political coverage and fearlessness will help him stand up to lobbyists in the Capitol.

A coin toss will determine statement and rebuttal right in the debate.
