Neighbor talks about threats that led to Iowa City standoff

Posted: Updated:
IOWA CITY (KWWL) - A scary night for people on Prairie du Chien Road in Iowa City when police say a man threatened to burn down his neighbor's home, then left his neighbor's place to get a gun from his own.

"First off, he threatened to shoot me," said Tamra Denny, the neighbor. "Then it went to, 'I'm gonna execute you two.' I'm freaking, OK, just freaking."

Denny says she's known the man who lives next door for about 10 years.

On Thursday night, he was at her place talking with her husband when the threats started. She says he was drinking.

"He just changed," said Denny. "He's gonna bomb us. He's gonna burn us."

Minutes after the man left, police arrived.  He didn't respond when they reached out, though they could see him inside. Denny says that's when police helped her and her neighbors out of their homes.

"They got us out, real safe," said Denny. "They took this elderly lady here and got her back."

Crisis negotiators were on the phone with him, and eventually they got him to come out of his trailer and come out without hurting anyone.

"Why didn't he give up?" asked Denny. "Why didn't he just come out and talk?"

Denny has had plans to move to Illinois. Following this situation, she wants to leave as soon as possible.

The man was taken to an Iowa City hospital for a mental health evaluation. Police have not released his name.

Charges are pending.
