Waterloo Schools brief parents on dangerous intruder safety plan

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

The Waterloo School District outlined to parents its plan if there's a gunman or other dangerous intruder in a school building.

Thursday night's meeting at Central Middle School detailed the training plan for students, teacher, staff and administrators throughout the district.

The guidelines explain when someone should run, barricade themselves in a room, or counteract the dangerous person.

Administrators say the guidelines are recommendations from the Department of Homeland Security and are part of a comprehensive school security plan.

"Our standard response was almost a one-size-fits-all. Every situation, every event we gotta do that exact same thing. Our new training and our direction really allows focus on options to respond to events as they occur to take the information they have at the time and respond accordingly," said Dr. Willie Barney of the Waterloo Community School District.

Student training will take place next month.

The plan will be posted to the district's website next week.
