Cedar Rapids couple scammed out of $44K on 'health supplements'

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - On Thursday, a judge barred a company from selling its products here in Iowa -- and one eastern Iowa woman is hoping others learn from her experience.

A Cedar Rapids couple bought boxes and boxes of pills from Leading Health Source, spending more than $44,000 on the pills over several months before their daughter caught on to the scam.

"He would say, 'Well we've got liquid eye,' or 'We've got liquid oxygen,'" said Karla Sibert, the couple's daughter, of the company's tactics. "At the time, my mother was on oxygen, and he just preyed on everything she said."

Sibert's parents have health problems and she's had in-home help for them -- but it wasn't enough to prevent Leading Health Source from scamming them.

"I mean, it's scary," said Sibert. "It is. Especially when you don't realize your parents are to the point of the mind loss and all of that."

She reached out to Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, who asked to have Leading Health Source barred from selling its products here in Iowa.

A lot of the products look like the kinds of things you would buy at a pharmacy or a health store. But what makes this situation different is the health claims the company was making.

"There were claims that they would would cure Alzheimer's, diabetes, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and of course they wouldn't cure those at all," said Miller.

Miller's office also got a refund for Sibert's parents.

Sibert says people should keep an eye on aging parents' finances and realize what may need to come next.

"They do not want to go to a nursing home, because that makes them feel old," said Sibert. "That's the thing that's so sad and the decision is going to have to be made. It's just when."

Through this court order, the company must also refund any other claims from Iowans.
