Dubuque woman accused of stealing payments for library fines

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) -- A 62-year-old Dubuque woman has been accused of stealing fines and fee payments when she worked at the public library in Dubuque.

The Dubuque Telegraph Herald says Barbara Nyheim turned herself in on Tuesday to face a felony theft charge. Online court records don't list the name of her attorney.

Library director Susan Hendricks initially reported a theft of about $17,200 but now says the total may be more than $50,000. An audit of the library's fine system discovered the money was missing.

Court records say Nyheim told investigators she'd been taking money from the library since 2009.
