DUBUQUE (KWWL) - A memorial service has been scheduled for U.S. Senate candidate and local doctor Doug Butzier, who died in a plane crash earlier this week.

59-year-old Butzier was flying to Dubuque from Ankeny Monday night when his plane crashed near the Dubuque Regional Airport. A memorial service will take place Saturday, Oct. 18 at 1 p.m. at the Heritage Center in Dubuque. A visitation will follow at 6 p.m.

"One thing I'd say that Doug would like to know is he cared about people," Wayne Dow said, EMS Supervisor with the Dubuque Fire Department.

Butzier served as the medical director for Dubuque Fire for 14 years. Dow didn't anticipate losing not only an employee, but also a friend.

"Tuesday morning when I was driving to work I heard the report of the plane crash... I thought, I wonder if that could be Doug. Then when I got to work, one of the guys said it was Doug."

Dow said Butzier had a good heart, and was always looking out for everyone.

"It's been tough the last couple of days. You really appreciate how short life can be sometimes and how sudden it can end."

Because voting has already begun for the November election, Doug Butzier's name will remain on the ballot.

Complete funeral arrangements for Dr. Butzier are pending.
