IDOT prepares for winter weather

Posted: Updated:
The Iowa Department of Transportation's winter season begins October 15th and runs through April 15th

"Looking everything over, getting the blades out, checking over the blades.," said Barry Thede, DOT highway maintenance supervisor.

Thede says they try to get at least half the trucks ready to go because you never know when the snow will hit.

To help drivers before heading out on the roads the DOT introduced a feature last year where some of the snow plows were equipped with dash cam video.

"Get a true report on what the road conditions are like. You know you just get right on the website, look at a picture that it's taking right out the window because they are good quality pictures," said Thede.

The DOT introduced this feature last year and just in the Cedar Valley they will be equipped with 10 cameras. Four hundred plows will have cameras across the state.

Thede says as the snow plows get out on the roads this winter, they always want you to remember to be aware and be careful of them.

"Gets pretty tough at times. There's a lot of three lane, four lane roads that are around here so I mean our drivers obviously can't see every blind spot that's around so people just need to be cautious when they're coming up around our snowplows."
