MAHASKA COUNTY (KWWL) -

A former state worker was arrested Wednesday after authorities say there was nearly $280,000 missing or mis-allocated over a period of more than 7 years from the Mahaska County Soil and Water Conservation District.

Jessica Strasser, who was secretary for the Conservation District until her resignation on Aug. 9, 2013, was charged with first-degree theft and ongoing criminal conduct. Both charges are felonies.

According to the Iowa Department of Public Safety, an audit completed this month revealed $279,344.58 had been improperly disbursed or not deposited.

More than $241,000 of that was cash withdrawn from the Conservation District's accounts, according to DPS.

The money was apparently mis-allocated between March 24, 2006, and Aug. 31, 2013.

Strasser turned herself in to the Mahaska County Jail on Wednesday.

The Oskaloosa Police Department, Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation and the Office of Auditor of State assisted the investigation.
