Buchanan Co. company assessing fire damage

BUCHANAN COUNTY (KWWL) -

A family-owned company in Buchanan County is assessing its losses after a huge fire over the weekend.

Smoke could be seen for miles as the fire burned at Merfeld Transport northeast of Independence.

Several fire departments battled the blaze Saturday night and again for part of Sunday morning.

The owners didn't want to speak on camera but they think the fire may have started in a camper that was inside the shed.

Unfortunately, the fire spread so quickly, they lost everything inside.

The building is pretty much leveled.

It housed equipment used in farming, trucking, and snow removal services.

Family members say the building was insured but some of the items inside weren't.

Some were family heirlooms with lots of sentimental value.

Fire crews aren't sure what sparked the blaze.

Fire crews say besides the fact it was an intense fire, the reason you could see the smoke from so far away is because of the tires on the equipment burning.

Luckily, no-one was inside at the time so no-one was hurt.

4 area fire departments responded to the scene to put out the fire.
