2015 Iowa State Fair dates may coincide with school

The 2015 Iowa State Fair will run August 13th through the 23rd, but with those dates, some Iowa students say they may need to choose between going to school or going to the state fair.

State law prohibits schools from beginning before September first unless schools get a waiver. Every public school in the state except for two did that this year.

Although the 2015 school start date isn't set yet officials in Waterloo say there may be an opportunity for school and the fair to coincide.

Waterloo 7th grade student, Mitchell Sage says the state fair and agriculture is important to him

"I want to be a farmer," said Sage.

The fair isn't all fun and games for him, instead it's a place to share his passion for agriculture.

"Well it's some fun and it's also, it's a learning experience because you can learn about everything that they have, agriculture, animals and everything," said Sage.

Waterloo schools usually start before September 1st and that will most likely be the case next year.

School officials say the benefits of starting early means they may not have to go so far into June.

As for Sage, the future farmer would rather express what's important in his life, agriculture, and the Iowa State Fair helps with that.

"It's really important because if there's no agriculture John Deere wouldn't be so big because they couldn't sell tractors to the farmers and it helps feed and like sweeten a can of soda," said Sage.

The CEO for the fair is defending their decision saying an early August or July fair date could conflict with county fairs.  He says many exhibits like crops and livestock may not be ready to be exhibited.
