INDEPENDENCE (KWWL) -
In Class 3A District 4 action, Independence played host to Charles City in a game with post-season implications.
After a big punt-return touchdown by the Mustangs, the Comets looked to strike back early in the first quarter. However Charles City quarterback Levi Blaine found Independence linebacker Matthew McMillan instead.
Independence capitalized on Charles City's mistakes with a big 50-yard touchdown pass to Spencer Pink from Nicholas Holt to extend their lead to 13.
Charles City drove late in the game as Blaine connected deep with Shane Feller, who managed to make the grab in Mustang territory.
The Independence defense stiffened up in the red zone, as defensive back Mason Scott notched his second interception of the game.
The Mustangs held on with a 16-14 victory with a game-winning field goal.
