Dubuque man leads police on high-speed chase, crashes

A Dubuque man was arrested after police said he led them on a high-speed chase and crashed into a building.

Robert Scott Schmitt, 38, of Dubuque was arrested just after 3 a.m Thursday morning on charges of operating while intoxicated, as well as a number of other traffic violations.

Dubuque Police said an officer attempted to stop Schmitt's vehicle for a loud muffler just after 3 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of 27th and Washington streets.

Schmitt failed to pull over for the officer and led the officer on a short pursuit in the area of Jackson Street North, according to police.

Schmitt continued to head north on Jackson Street at a high rate of speed and attempted to turn right onto 20th Street when he lost control of the vehicle and struck the former H & W brick building on the NE corner of 30th and Jackson, according to police

Dubuque Police estimate $200 worth of damage was done to the building, and $5,000 worth of damage was done to Schmitt's vehicle.
