Waterloo hospital reports several cases of enterovirus D-68

WATERLOO (KWWL) -

Officials with Allen Hospital in Waterloo confirm that they have treated several cases of a fast-spreading respiratory virus.

Nationwide, enterovirus D-68 has sickened more than 664 people. Most of those are children. Sick people usually exhibit flu-like symptoms.

Jim Waterbury, a representative of the Waterloo hospital, said several local cases have been so severe that they've had to be transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Most people recover on their own, but the virus is especially dangerous to children with asthma or pre-existing respiratory conditions.

In the U.S., five people with the infection have died, but doctors cannot link the virus to the cause of death.

One boy in New Jersey was officially killed by the virus.
