OELWEIN (KWWL) - Voters have elected Peggy Sherrets as Oelwein's new mayor.

People petitioned to hold a special election after the city council chose Sherrets as the acting mayor. She was one of four candidates on the ballot.

Sherrets had more than 700 total votes from Tuesday night's special election.

June Griffith was second behind Sherrets with 386 votes.

Ryan DeHaven placed in third with 155 votes. Brandon Kieffert had the least amount of votes with 69.

Sherrets will take the spot of former Oelwein mayor, Jason Manus. He resigned after sexual abuse charges were filed against him.
